Statutory school age up to Year 11

Students may be eligible for home to school travel assistance if they meet certain criteria:

  • They are attending the nearest suitable school as determined by the local authority
  • Live over the distance – over 3 miles for children year 7 to 11
  • Live under the distance but their learning difficulty or disability means they cannot reasonably be expected to walk safely, even when accompanied.

If you believe your child may be eligible for travel assistance you must apply via the local authority’s on-line application form.

Post 16 Transport

The eligibility criteria for travel assistance for Post 16 learners (year 12 and above) is different to that of compulsory school-aged children. Local authorities do not have to provide free or subsidised post 16 travel support.

Students with a learning difficulty or a disability, where there is a need for specialised transport due to an inability to walk or use public transport, even if accompanied by an adult, may be eligible.

If a student is eligible, in return for a financial contribution (less for low-income families) the necessary travel assistance would be provided (this may also be in the form of payment of a Personal Travel Assistance Budget to enable you to make your own travel arrangements).

You must complete the travel assessment application form to apply for travel assistance. This will enable travel assistance to be organised in time for the start of the academic year.
